Electronic Manufacturing
An Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) is responsible for the complete production process of Printed Circuit Board (PCB) assemblies and electronic components for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). This includes designing, assembling, manufacturing, and testing the products to meet the specifications of the OEMs. Depending on the requirements of the OEM, EMS may need to provide only product design services or complete custom manufacturing solutions. While most companies prefer automated manufacturing for large product lines, some choose manual assembly for smaller runs, which can save on setup costs and reduce the time required for automated assembly equipment. Overall, EMS offers a one-stop solution to OEMs for all their electronic manufacturing needs.
The EMS industry dates back to 1961, but it experienced rapid growth in the 1980s, especially after the introduction of Surface Mount Technology (SMT) on printed circuit boards. This technology greatly streamlined the assembly of electronic components, which had previously been time-consuming. Initially, EMS corporations were primarily associated with information processing (computers) and communication industries.
